ADDRESSING CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY FATALITIES & INJURIES

BRITISH SAFETY COUNCIL BRINGS REGULATORS AND INDUSTRY LEADERS TOGETHER AT KEY CONFERENCE

Accident rates in the construction industry account for the largest number of fatal injuries each year compared to other main industry groups. In 2007/08 72 workers were killed and 3,764 received major injuries*.  In an effort to drive improvements in health and safety performance the British Safety Council is hosting a major conference in London for directors, managers, health and safety practitioners, regulators and key industry leaders to identify what needs to be done to drive improvements in health and safety performance.

Open to BSC member organisations and anyone working in the construction industry, the conference will provide those attending with the opportunity to hear from the regulator, the BSC and industry practitioners on the challenges the industry faces in working to prevent fatal and major accidents, injuries and ill-health.

Rita Donaghy, who led the recent enquiry into the underlying causes of fatal accidents in the industry, will provide the keynote speech.  Philip White, the HSE’s Chief Inspector of Construction, will outline the new HSE Strategy and talk about the need for the HSE and construction industry stakeholders to work together to improve industry safety.  Alan Ritchie, General Secretary, UCATT and Shaun Davis, Director of Health and Safety, Rok plc will focus on the importance of achieving a positive safety culture and the benefits that director leadership and worker involvement can bring; and Sam Stevens, Enabling Works Olympic 2010 Project, will be speaking about the benefits of ‘Near Miss’ reporting.

Nina Wrightson OBE, Chairman of the BSC’s Trustees and Past President of IOSH, will be chairing the conference.

The conference will take place at Vintner’s Hall in London on Thursday 5 November 2009 from 9:00am -13:00pm and further details are available from the Events Team (events@britsafe.org)
